Our first three books—Christianity: An Introduction, Turning Points: Decisive Moments in the History of Christianity, and The Story of Christianity: An Illustrated History of 2,000 Years of the Christian Faith—each have significant overlap, while also having very distinct differences, especially in terms of how they present History.
For the Midterm Exam Essay, your task is to write an essay of at least 3 pages analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the various approaches used in these first three books. Your paper should be centered around an argument detailing what you believe to be the best, most effective approach for presenting historical information about Christianities.
This is not asking which book is most effective or which book you liked the best. Each book uses a variety of approaches. You want to consider all of the approaches each book takes and then form your argument. You want to think about the construction of knowledge and how the same or similar information is presented in different ways by different texts. Throughout, be sure to use course materials (and only course materials) to justify your decisions—make sure to properly cite using MLA parenthetical citations.
Your paper needs a clear, strong introduction—make sure to have a good hook, background information, and a clear announcement of the topic and your thesis statement. You will need many body paragraphs with information presented in a clear and organized fashion. You need clear examples and analysis. You also want a strong conclusion that does more than summarize the paper.
