Choose ONE of the following questions and write an essay.
1. On the first page of the Politics, Aristotle distinguishes the rule of a master, kingly
rule, and political rule, noting that those who treat them all the same “do not argue
finely.” Trace his account of these three different kinds of rule through the Politics,
explain how they are distinguished from one another, how those they rule are
distinguished, and how the context of their rule differs. Does the best man participate
in all three kinds of rule, or is one sort to be preferred to the others?
2. Describe the different kinds of regime Aristotle discusses and explain how he
distinguishes them. Then explain how he thinks regimes change from one form to
another. What regime is best, and how does it come to be and preserve itself?
3. At the beginning of Book II of the Politics and again at the end of Book V—and
perhaps implicitly throughout the work—Aristotle criticizes the political thought of
his teacher Plato. Describe his critique and explain how it elucidates Aristotle’s
political science and the various ways that differs from Plato’s political philosophy.
How, do you think, would Plato answer Aristotle’s critique? How might Plato
criticize Aristotle’s Politics?
