Instructions:
Read the scenario and assigned discussion questions below. Post an answer to your question by Wednesday and respond to 2 other students before the end of the week. The deadline for all posts is midnight on Sunday. Remember to answer all assigned questions, incorporating the assigned text an external sources with the appropriate citations. The purpose of the discussion is to engage your classmates in discussion on the assigned concepts and to not simply debate opinions. As in every discussion posting, references and citations (properly APA formatted) are required.
Scenario:
A patient is in a coma that appears irreversible. His mother, who is his surrogate, firmly believes that he will recover and that God is taking a hand to work a miracle if everyone will just wait long enough. She wants everything done for the patient, including resuscitation if he arrests.
She insists that he stay in the hospital, and is very upset that he was transferred out of the ICU and his care was moved to comfort measures, rather than aggressive treatment. The mother does not speak English and is strong in her religious beliefs. The physicians for the patient are very upset and concerned about continuing to provide care that they believe is futile. The patient is developing a serious pneumonia, and the mother wants it treated aggressively. The physicians are reluctant.
Assigned Question:
If you were the mother in this scenario, what would be your personal perspective for your child – aggressive treatment or comfort measures?
Would that perspective be the same if you were a physician in the scenario?
In addition to the mother (surrogate) and physicians’ perspectives, what additional factors must a health administrator consider in this scenario as far as operations?
