Essay Organization/Structure:
Because this essay is arranged deductively, we’ll use the following essay structure:
Introductory paragraph(s): Provide an engaging lead, background information about the work of art, and thesis. *Note: You will answer reporter-type questions to help present the background information about your selected work of art.
Body paragraphs: For each paragraph, provide a way in which the artwork is important or meaningful and the research information that suggests this. *Note: You will use transitions between body paragraphs.
Conclusion: Provide an ending that “wraps up” the discussion rather than summarizes it.
Keep in Mind:
The essay should focus on what other people have said about the work of art so that you can present its overall importance. Because of this, the majority of the essay involves synthesizing other people’s perspectives. We are not analyzing the work itself.
Also, your subject must be clear and specific. Remember that we’re not focusing on the artist but rather their work and people’s opinions about it. Likewise, we’re not examining a genre/medium (e.g., horror movies, paintings, etc.) but instead, you should focus on a specific work within the genre/medium. For instance, instead of focusing on Romeo and Juliet, examine a specific adaptation of the play. Or, instead of focusing on Harry Potter, you want to be clear whether you’re addressing the books, films, theme park, or the entire franchise.
Furthermore, you may make the scope as broad or narrow as you’d like in order to conclude how the artwork is important/meaningful. For instance, you can examine an entire TV series or simply a specific season, a film trilogy or only one of its films, a series of novels or just one book.
Lastly, keep in mind that the significance or importance of the work doesn’t have to be a beneficial one. It may, in fact, be negative or a combination of positive and negative.
Additional Reminders:
The thesis statement needs to provide a summary about the way in which the work of art is meaningful/important. Because of this, we must use terms that express “importance” such as noteworthy, meaningful, significant, vital, or substantial. And remember, the thesis is a one-sentence summary of the topic sentences in your essay.
