In this assignment, we undertake an exercise where you look at a complete process for effective goal setting. Goals can be a double edged sword (e.g., they might be effective in guiding behaviour AND decrease intrinsic motivation) but goals can be effective if structured and implemented well, especially if intrinsic motivation is low at the beginning. We all have vague ideas of things that we’d wish to achieve, but they are not effective as goals.
In this forum, choose a real goal for yourself and engage in the complete goal setting process. Summarize your work on each step in the assignment.
1. Choose a goal (e.g., a new year’s resolution from week 1 or another goal relevant to you)
2. Describe specific details of the ideal state, note the discrepancy between the present and ideal (e.g., how much money do you want to have saved in 6 months). Draw a Venn-diagram (overlapping circles) showing the present and ideal states and how close they are.
3. Connect the ideal state to at least 3 bigger personal strivings (draw a diagram but you don’t have to put it in the assignment) showing interconnected items.
4. Identify 3 moderately difficult, specific, short term sub-goals. Clearly specify the opportunity for feedback information with each sub-goal.
5. Identify implementation intentions, including starting conditions, a plan to resume after a setback, and ending conditions.
6. How will you deal with problems caused by these goals, such as feeling stress, reduced intrinsic motivation, and failures along the way.
Utilize the provided sources and cite them in support of your response.
