Social media and ‘The Presentation of Self’ online:
How and in what ways do social media users in Canada use ‘impression management’ techniques online? In your essay, explore the dynamics of one’s identity performance within online spaces and explain how people’s positioning in the social categories that we discuss in class (gender, class, and/or race) impact their ‘presentation of self’ online.
You can pick one topic to explore (i.e. gender) or you can look at multiple topics.
In your essay explain how particular agents of socialization and/or particular ideologies attempt to structure/limit/expand online identity performance by pointing to specific examples (for example: celebrity influencers, or platform algorithms, or sexist/classist/ableist/racist/ heterosexist ideologies).
Sources & Referencing: This assignment is a research essay that draws on course material/concepts as well as other scholarly or media sources that you find through your own research. Your essay should draw links to and engage with at least ONE course assigned material as well as at least ONE other scholarly sources (peer-reviewed books, book chapters, journal articles, etc). Additional sources from non-peer-reviewed articles/news reports, etc. can be used (and, in some cases, can benefit your analysis) but will not count towards the minimum amount of sources required outlined above.
Quotes: Direct quotations that are longer than 30 words must be presented in ‘block quotes’ and used sparingly in your essay. All other references need to be quoted or paraphrased with an accompanying in-text citation following either APA, MLA, or Chicago in-text citation guidelines. *NO FOOTNOTES OR ENDNOTES*
Formatting: The finished work should be structured in essay format with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The use of ‘I’ and other personal pronouns is welcomed and encouraged:
go forth, use ‘I’, and speak from the first person!!
More Formatting:
12 point font, Times New Roman, double-spaced
1 inch margins
Page numbers
Your paper must be in either Word or . PDF format ONLY
Upload your paper to the Brightspace Assignment task as one document. This means that the cover page, the essay, bibliography, and any appendices (if applicable) are combined into one document.
Your paper must have a title (something relevant to your essay, not simply ‘Essay’)
Your paper must also have a title/cover page and a bibliography.
Your paper should contain references and follow a single in-text citation style throughout. You can choose which one style you use (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.), but remember to be consistent. See https://library.carleton.ca/guides/help/citing-your-sources for common style guides.
** Be careful when copying/pasting quotes as sometimes the font or colour changes—make sure to go back and ensure everything is in the same font (size, colour, etc.) **
