Essay Checklist
General:
Essay consists of at least 5 distinct paragraphs, including an introduction, a conclusion and at least three body paragraphs that are organized by topic.
Essay meets all requirements presented in other directions.
Introduction:
Provides clear and interesting background information and context, sets the stage for the events (major people, places, dates, themes, ideas, definitions, events, etc.)
Provides thesis (i.e. reworks the question into a clear statement that provides an answer). Thesis should meet the following criteria: it is debatable, it informs the reader of the writers’ point of view, and it answers the question.
Analysis:
ANSWER THE QUESTION! Don’t just summarize events and evidence (though some of that is necessary). Use the evidence to support your argument (which is your answer to the question, or thesis) and provide meaningful document analysis. Document analysis means to break apart pieces of the document, investigate and explain the meaning, provide historical context (is the document a reaction to something going on at the time?), etc.
No more than 20% of the writing is direct quotes
Conclusion:
Rephrases the thesis in a new and fresh way
Restates your main ideas without being repetitive
Does not introduce new evidence. Deals with the big ideas but uses the topics and themes discussed in the body
