Most college students – especially those choosing to enroll in a health psychology class – have an excellent understanding of the behaviors most conducive to their wellbeing. Despite this knowledge, most of us don’t quite live up to our highest ideals; we know what we should do, but our actions are often at odds with our best intentions. Understanding why this is the case is fundamental to the field of health psychology and using yourself as a test case is one of the best ways to learn about the processes that lead us astray as well as those that can get us back on track. You will select a behavior you’d like to change, and you will use the material presented in this course to monitor that behavior, strategize about how best to improve it, and reflect on your progress toward your goals.
Using the relevant research and theoretical literature as a guide (e.g., models discussed in the textbook or others that are applicable), conduct a self-modification project designed to change a health-relevant behavior (e.g., smoking, exercise, healthy eating, sleep hygiene).
In your paper,
1. review the background literature and theoretical model you used to develop your program/treatment
2. describe the program/treatment you designed
3. discuss the effectiveness of your program (include discussion of behavioral logs – see below)
4. specify the factors that you believe contribute to your behavior as well as the factors that contributed to the effectiveness (or ineffectiveness) of your behavioral modification plan. Be sure to integrate course material into your paper.
Before implementing your program/treatment, log the frequency of the behavior (baseline). You should have at least 3 days of baseline data.
Continue to monitor and log your behavior during the treatment phase.
Requirements: Paper should be approximately 2-4 pages, typed (12-point font) with one-inch margins and double-spaced.
