Article Summary and Critique Assignment Instructions (25 points)
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this assignment is to practice locating, reading, summarizing, and critiquing a peer-reviewed research article related to any psychology topic that you find interesting. Psychologists conduct scientific research to study the mind and they publish the details of their research findings in peer-reviewed journal articles. Textbooks can provide brief summaries of research but a complete understanding can only be gained by reading the original journal articles. Journal articles often include complex descriptions of theoretical perspectives, advanced terminology, detailed descriptions of psychological methods and results, and conclusions regarding the significance of the findings. These articles can be difficult to read but they become easier to read with more practice. This assignment will help you to develop skills you need to go directly to the original source of knowledge in the field of psychology.
INSTRUCTIONS:
For this assignment, you will locate a peer-reviewed research article via the NAU library search engines (i.e., PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES) related to any psychology topic that you find interesting. You will need to find the article on the Cline Library website and download it (instructions for finding the article are provided below, at the end of the assignment instructions). You will then carefully read the article, write a summary, and conduct a critical analysis.
*IMPORTANTLY – the article you find must be a research article, which means that the authors conducted an original study in which they collected their own data (rather than summarizing or reviewing data from previous articles). You can usually identify a research article because it has a separate Methods section (with Participants, Materials/Procedure) and a separate Results section (with specific details about statistical tests, results, and statistical significance).
Introduction Paragraph = 3/3; Theoretical Perspectives in Article = 2/2; Summary of Methods = 5/5; Summary of Main Findings = 4/4; Summary of Limitations/Future Research = 3/3; Critical Analysis = 4/4; APA Format = 4/4
Your assignment should include the following:
• Introduction paragraph – introduce your topic of interest, why it is interesting or important, and the topic of the research article you located (3 pts)
Article Summary – the article summary must include:
A brief summary of the theoretical perspectives described in the article (2 pts)
This can be found in the introduction section of the article, as part of the literature review. What are the main perspectives or theories that are being investigated in the article you are reading? Describe the main perspectives. Include definitions of advanced terminology.
A brief summary of the methods used (5 pts)
What methods did the authors use? Was it a survey? If so, what types of questions were asked? Was it a computer task? If so, describe the computer task. Was there a between-subjects group comparison? Was there a within-subjects pre/post comparison? Did the study include an experiment? A quasi-experiment? Describe with enough detail so that someone reading your assignment has an understanding of the basic method without having to read the original article.
A summary of the main findings (4 pts)
In a Research Methods course you should gain practice reading the “Results” section of a research article. The results can be difficult to interpret. You can often find a summary of the key findings at the beginning of the Discussion section toward the end of the article that can help to guide you as you attempt to understanding the results section.
A summary of limitations or ideas for future research (3 pts)
Limitations are found in the discussion section and can include aspects of the research that are problematic or missing.
Critical Analysis (4 pts)
Here are some questions you can answer to help you critically analyze the article:
• Do the results justify all of the authors’ conclusions? Do the authors make conclusions that go beyond their key findings? Explain.
• Does the research appear to be valid and reliable? Are there any concerns about validity? (think about forms of validity that you learned about in research methods – construct validity – including face validity and content validity, internal validity, statistical validity, external validity, ecological validity)
o Critically evaluating validity is required in this assignment. You must discuss at least two forms of validity in your evaluation. Describe and explain your assessment and be sure to use the appropriate validity term (e.g., internal validity) in your explanation.
• Do you have any questions about the topic or the research that are not answered in the article?
Formatting (4 pts): Your article summary assignment must be written in APA format, with an APA formatted title page and references section, and submitted as a Microsoft Word document. Your assignment will be 2- to 3-pages, double-spaced (not including the title page and references). You must also include APA formatted in-text citations for all references. An APA format template has been uploaded to our BbLearn course site. The article you summarize must be included in the References and in-text citations.
IMPORTANT: You must also use your own words to summarize the research article. You cannot copy and paste, and you cannot use quotes of any kind. No quotes are allowed for this assignment because one purpose of the assignment is for you to practice summarizing research in your own words.
